Being both smaller and less expensive than most hybrids, the new Toyota Yaris brings new technology motoring to more people. It makes Vauxhall's Ampera look very expensive and will tempt some people away from diesel power.

It may be 'supermini' size yet at times the Yaris feels eerily like a limousine as it glides smoothly away under electric power. The extra weight of the batteries, electric motor and associated equipment (some 201kg) makes the car feel more solid than the standard Yaris. As usual with nickel-metal hydride batteries the range in all-electric mode is extremely short. Still pricey compared to a base Yaris at £10,635.
