Ford F-150 Lightning reservations close for firm orders

Ford customers are no longer able to pre-order the 2022 F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck. Going forward, the carmaker will instead convert existing reservations into orders from January 2022.

As the reservation page on Ford's site reads, "As we prepare to make history together, we’ve closed reservations so we can start accepting orders.” Most recently, Ford CEO Jim Farley had mentioned that the number of pre-orders was approaching the 200,000 mark.

Ford had begun pre-production of the F-150 Lightning in September. As a result of the high demand, Ford has confirmed it will significantly increase production from 40,000 to 80,000 units of the F-150 Lightning per year. Against this background, the manufacturer is investing an additional 250 million US dollars and creating 450 more jobs. The Ford F-150 Lightning is expected to enter series-production in Spring 2022.

The US carmaker is reportedly offering the electric F-150 Lightning in two variants. The first will have a range of 230 miles and 318 kW of drive power. The other will have a range of 300 miles and 420 kW of power.

It not yet known how the pre-orders will be distributed among these variants or if Ford will concentrate on one variant for the time being to ramp up production.
