Distance record set for VW ID.3

A Volkswagen ID.3 has beaten its official WLTP range by more than 100 km (62 miles), after an EV driving expert 'hypermiled' one of the new EVs for 330 miles on a charge.

The VW ID.3 58 kWh driven has an official range of 261 miles (420 km), but was driven from Zwickau - the factory where the ID.3 is produced - to Schaffhausen in Switzerland on a single charge, a distance of 330 miles (531 km).

It's recognised that the trip is not a true reflection of day-to-day driving, but does give an indication as to how the ID.3 can perform.

Driver Felix Egolf travelled 56% of the trip on country roads, with the remainder on motorways and trunk roads. Techniques such as slip-streaming behind lorries on the motorway were employed, and lift-and-coast driving where possible.

However, the ID.3 was standard, and had an additional 250 kg over just the car and driver by including a cameraman and equipment. Power consumption was rated at 10.9 kWh/100km, rather than the official WLTP figure of 14.5 kWh/100km.
