Alfa Romeo Tonale concept wows at Geneva

The Alfa Romeo Tonale has been showcased at the Geneva Motor Show, with the concept powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain, and previewing potential new design ideas.

Stylish, sporty, and efficient, the Tonale concept was a surprise launch at the motor show - a bit of a novelty these days with manufacturers often teasing out launches over the weeks preceding an event.

There are now powertrain details, beyond the fact that it’s a plug-in hybrid, and much was made of Alfa Romeo’s sporting heritage. Alfa has cleverly tweaked the serpent element of its badge to showcase electrified powertrain models.

The mid-sized SUV features driving modes including Dual Power and Advance E, and a new interior with a focus on quality. Although not confirmed for production, the press conference stated the worldwide sales figures and growth in the mid-sized SUV sector - which are significant - so a production version of the Tonale is expected in the near future. With recent reports from the FCA Group regarding electric models, it is more than likely that a Tonale would remain PHEV too.
