Kia Niro sets new world record MPG figure

Kia has set a new world record for the lowest fuel consumption for a hybrid car driving across America with its Niro crossover.

The coast-to-coast run saw Kia cover 3,715.4 miles on just 4.1 tanks of fuel, setting a Guinness World Record figure of 76.6 MPG.

Setting off from Los Angeles and arriving in New York, the Niro hybrid crossover used 48.5 gallons (US). The Niro used for the record attempt was completely standard, and not altered in any way for the challenge.

Considering US Gallons are a different size to UK Imperial gallons, the Niro would have achieved a converted fuel economy figure of 91.5 MPG if the conditions would be able to be replicated in the UK.

Orth Hedrick, vice president, product planning Kia Motors America, said: "We're extremely pleased with the Niro's record-breaking performance. We set out to build a vehicle that offers real-world utility, great looks and fantastic mileage, and setting the Guinness World Record title confirms our achievement."
