New cars teased by BMW to mark its centenary

BMW could be set to launch a new concept at its 100th anniversary celebrations, starting later today (Monday 7th March), after releasing a teaser image with the caption "Exciting times ahead".

Although no other details of the car are available, or visible from the image, the car's styling looks similar in concept to the i8 hybrid supercar - part of the firm's revolutionary BMW i Series. This has recently expanded to include all vehicles with plug-in capability as BMW makes the use of carbon fibre and electric powertrains more common through its range.

The expected electric powertrain is made more likely by the pre-celebrations press release that points out BMW's innovative past and present, saying: "The knowhow collected during the development of BMW i automobiles means that today the BMW Group is playing a pioneering role in the design of a sustainable form of individual mobility which is independent of fossil fuels.

"The BMW Group is adopting a leading role in structuring individual mobility for the future with attractive electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, innovative services and consistent implementation of sustainability targets along the entire value chain."

Further news will be announced at the BMW The next 100 Years event, which begins at 2pm GMT today.
