Green focus for Car of the Year shortlist

The shortlist for the European Car of the Year 2016 has been announced with two models available as plug-in hybrids and six available with CO2 emissions levels under 100 g/km CO2.

The seven contenders for the prestigious prize are:

• Audi A4
• BMW 7 Series
• Jaguar XE
• Mazda MX-5
• Skoda Superb
• Vauxhall Astra
• Volvo XC90

In a list that features a number of winners, commended and shortlisted models from Next Green Car's 2015 Awards, there is a clear emphasis on both excellent cars and frugal motoring. The greenest cars are the BMW 7-Series and Volvo XC90 - both of which feature plug-in hybrid variants that are expected to make up a significant part of each model's sales.

The Audi A4, Jaguar XE, Vauxhall Astra and Skoda Superb all offer zero road tax motoring with sub-100 g/km CO2 levels - the Astra the cleanest of the four with emissions as low as 82 g/km CO2. All but the XE are available in two body styles, with the Audi either a saloon or estate, and the Astra and Superb a hatch or estate.

Last year's winner was the Volkswagen Passat, a car that shares many components with the Skoda Superb and Audi A4. However, it is notoriously difficult to predict which car the judges, made up of a panel of 58 respected motoring journalists from 22 European countries, will pick as the overall winner. Past champions have included ultra low emission cars like the Nissan Leaf and Vauxhall Ampera, while compact hatchbacks including the Fiat 500, Volkswagen Golf and Peugeot 308 have all taken the overall prize too.

The overall winner will be announced on the eve of the Geneva Motor Show on Monday 29th February 2016.
