13.11.2015Toyota's hybrid sales pass 200,000 units
Toyota has announced that sales of its hybrid models in the UK have passed the 200,000 mark. In the 15 years since the launch of the Prius in the UK, sales of Toyota and Lexus vehicles featuring a hybrid powertrain have seen the technology enter the mainstream car market, with more models on their way.
There are currently 11 Toyota and Lexus models that feature a hybrid powertrain and they will be joined within the next few months by the new Toyota Prius and Rav-4 Hybrid, and two new Lexus models in the shape of the new RX SUV and RC coupe.
Just in 2015 to date, almost 35,000 Toyota and Lexus hybrids have been sold and the powertrain is a crucial part of the companies' model line-up, accounting for almost a third of sales - and more than half of all Toyota Auris sales.
Toyota has confirmed recently that hybrid propulsion will play an increasingly important part of its plans for environmental sustainability. Ultimately, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will be the main focus for the company in the future, but Toyota and Lexus see hybrid models as a key stepping stone to reducing emissions.
