Emissions investigation widens to involve non-VW Group manufacturers

Germany's vehicle regulators have opened up the investigation into emissions irregularities to include an additional 20 manufacturers outside the VW Group. The announcement, made today (Wednesday 11th November) and reported on by Reuters, sees more than 30 non-VW Group models added to planned tests by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt - KBA).

All the models are under suspicion of manipulating nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions and all feature diesel engines. The KBA said that the expanded investigation has come about because of Volkswagen's admission of rigging emissions tests and has had reliable information on unusual emissions levels passed on to them by other parties.

"Since the end of September KBA has been investigating whether further manipulation of emissions, of nitrogen oxides in particular, is taking place in the market," said KBA in a statement. It has revealed that the regulators have been comparing readings recorded under test conditions to those from portable emissions measuring devices in real-world conditions and that two-thirds of the measurements have taken place.

The following models have been confirmed as being under investigation - though no proof of emissions manipulation has been found yet apart from those from VW and Audi, where the VW Group companies have already admitted cheating tests.
