Next Green Car – Urban Car Award 2018
Urban Car WINNER: Smart EQ fortwo coupe
The Smart range is tailored to urban driving, and the addition of the all-electric EQ badge makes for an ideal runabout. A compact footprint, nippy performance, light steering, and no gears to worry about means that the Smart EQ fortwo is a doddle to drive about town - and with zero-tailpipe emissions, does its bit to improve local air quality.
New this year - alongside the EQ branding - is the addition of a 22 kW on-board charger option. This really opens the Smart range up, as on the standard 7 kW on-board charger model, the minimum charging time was more than 2.5 hours - now it's less than 40 minutes to charge its 17.6 kWh battery.
The ability to replenish the Smart EQ fortwo's almost 100 mile official range (80 miles real-world) in a third of the time than previously possible makes this EV far more flexible than before, and a better all-round model for that. Smart's EQ fortwo coupe with 22 kW on-board charger is priced from £17,695 OTR (including the Category 1 OLEV grant).

NGC verdict: "Small but perfectly packaged for urban driving, the Smart EQ fortwo is a leading example of an electric car that's better suited to its task than the petrol version. It's easily one of the best ways to get about town on four wheels."
