Next Green Car – Next Generation Award 2018
There are so many exciting models due in 2019 that this Award has proved one of the toughest to call. However, the Volkswagen ID. has the potential to become the next generation of "people's car", following in the footsteps of the Beetle and Golf.
Built on a new platform designed for electric powertrains, the VW ID. is important not just as a model in its own right, but also for its wider part to play in the Volkswagen Group. Volkswagen has built much of its success on shared parts, which means the ID.'s underpinnings will also be found on models from Skoda, Seat, and Audi in the future.
The ID. will have multiple variants available once launched, with initial battery options providing from 200 miles to 275 miles driving range. These will be joined by a longer-range version asa future development. Other details already announced include ultra-rapid CCS charging at up to 125 kW, with wireless home and public charging capability. The ID. will offer both single- and dual- motor options.
Winning NGC's Next-Gen Award, the ID. has fought off strong competition from other exciting models including Honda's Urban EV, the Mini E, and Audi's e-tron. Considering the similarly-sized Golf is consistently one of the best cars in its class, we fully expect the ID. to be a market changing car that will showcase the full benefits of all-electric motoring.
NGC verdict: "The ID. will offer mass-market electric motoring at an affordable price with plenty of performance options for buyers to choose from. Like the market-changing Mini, Beetle, or Fiat 500, Volkswagen's ID. has the potential to become a landmark car for the industry."
