Next Green Car – Manufacturer Award 2018

Manufacturer WINNER: Hyundai

This being the first time Next Green Car has awarded a prize to a manufacturer, rather than a car, we thought Hyundai's electric vehicle development warranted recognition. The launch of the Kona Electric will significantly advance the global EV market, as Hyundai is the first to offer a long-range all-electric car at mass-market prices.

Combine the Kona Electric with the existing Ioniq range - which includes the Electric and Plug-In Hybrid models - and Hyundai offers UK buyers two of the best EVs on the market, an achievement that can't yet be matched by any other manufacturer. While others, including Nissan, BMW, and Renault, have excellent pure-electric models, each currently offer only one core EV; one step ahead is Hyundai which can now boast a multi-model EV range.

Furthermore, Hyundai is set to add to its electric line-up in early 2019, with the addition of the Nexo, its second-generation hydrogen fuel cell (FCEV) SUV. The Hyundai Motor Group is also making big EV strides with sister brand Kia's launch of the e-Niro due in April 2019, and the new Soul EV due for launch in late 2019, both joining Kia’s existing electric line-up. Within this Group effort to make EVs more accessible, it is Hyundai, however, that is spear-heading the way with the launch of the Kona Electric, which looks set to kick-start other manufacturers to offer 300+ mile range EVs at affordable prices.

NGC verdict: "While Hyundai's Kona Electric has been making headlines this year, the company's plug-in activities are far more significant than just one model. Now with the Ioniq Electric, Ioniq Plug-In, and Kona Electric, Hyundai is becoming a class-leading electric brand."

Tony Whitehorn, Hyundai Motor UK President and CEO, said: "We have a very clear mission to become a world-leader in electrified and fuel cell vehicles, and it gives me great pleasure to see that the big strides we have already achieved in that mission are gaining recognition.

Our electric offerings, including Kona and IONIQ, represent extremely good value for money, are packed full of the latest technology and come as standard with the peace-of-mind that's afforded by Hyundai's five-year unlimited mileage and eight-year or 125,000-mile high voltage battery warranty. The future of both our fuel cell and traditional electrified powertrains is taking shape as we speak, but I guarantee you there's much more exciting news to come."
