Next Green Car – MPV Awards 2016

BMW 225xe – CO2 46 g/km – NGC Rating 37

Already a very capable MPV, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is made even better with the addition of a plug-in hybrid powertrain. With improved efficiency, the BMW 225xe is able to officially cover 25 miles on electric-only power (20 real-world), emit just 46 g/km CO2, and return a fuel+electric economy of 141 MPG (53 MPG fuel only), making it one of the greenest MPVs around. With the 225xe just one of a number of plug-in models now offered by BMW, you can see and feel the company's electrical expertise when you get behind the wheel. Well equipped, cheap to run, and practical, the 225xe is a refined family workhorse. Priced from £30,155 (inc Category 2 OLEV grant).

NGC verdict: "The only PHEV MPV on the market, BMW's 225xe manages to combine the practical capabilities of its 2 Series Active Tourer with its tried and tested plug-in hybrid powertrain. The result is a brilliant family workhorse that costs very little to run."

- Renault Scenic – CO2 92 g/km – NGC Rating 34

Considering that Renault created the MPV sector, until recently the only model in the sector was the aged Scenic. With the new Scenic, a stylish, practical and efficient compact MPV, the French firm is well and truly back in the game. There are a number of frugal models to choose from in the Scenic line-up, but the pick of the range is the new Hybrid Assist diesel, which will officially return 81 MPG (65 MPG real-world) while emitting 92 g/km CO2 thanks to its mild hybrid powertrain. Priced from £21,445.
