Next Green Car – Citycar Awards 2015
Fiat 500 0.9 TwinAir – CO2 90 g/km – NGC Rating 29
The look for Fiat’s new 500 definitely works along the lines of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. While the design is instantly recognisable, the car has changed across the board. The interior is better than before with improved equipment and levels of build quality. Add to that a huge raft of personalisation options, some fantastic and frugal engines and a well sorted chassis that thrives around town, and the new Fiat 500 runs away with the Citycar award. Available in hard or soft-top versions, emissions are as low as 88 g/km CO2 with the award-winning TwinAir engine, which offers an official combined fuel economy figure of 74.3 MPG. Priced from £13,065.
NGC verdict: "Fiat has taken the popular and successful 500 and made it even better. Economy figures rival the best in its class and the characterful citycar offers a great blend of frugal fun and practicality."
Smart fortwo 1.0 litre – CO2 93 g/km – NGC Rating 30
Stylish, frugal – but above all – tiny, the Smart fortwo is ideally tailored for city driving. Smart has worked on the previous fortwo’s weakest points and created a well-rounded little machine. The fortwo is nicer to look at inside and out, though the biggest development has come in the drivetrain with two strong engines and a new-to-Smart manual gearbox. With official emissions and fuel economy statistics coming in at 93 g/km CO2 and 69 MPG respectively, the fortwo is a great car to run around town in. Priced from £11,125.
