Next Green Car – Large Family Car Awards 2014
WINNER: Ford Mondeo 2.0-litre Hybrid – CO2: 99 g/km – NGC: TBC*
It is about time Ford offered a hybrid model in Europe and the new Mondeo is it. A 2.0-litre petrol engine and two electric motors power the hybrid drive-train, delivering a combined power output of 186 bhp. Figures from Ford show the petrol-hybrid has an official combined fuel economy of 67.3 MPG with CO2 emissions under 100 g/km. The new hybrid also features advanced safety features including pedestrian detection, pre-collision assist and lane control. New low emission diesel and petrol engines (made in the UK) will also be added to the line-up during 2015. While pricing has yet to be announced, the new Mondeo hybrid will be available as a saloon and estate shortly.
NGC verdict: "Well done to Ford for bringing its hybrid know-how to the UK market. Helped by its EcoBoost engine, the Mondeo Hybrid delivers emissions just under the 100gCO2/km threshold."
"We are delighted that the Ford Mondeo Hybrid has won in the Large Family Car category. With cutting-edge powertrains, like our first hybrid to be built in Europe, we’ve improved fuel efficiency and CO2 without sacrificing the power and driving experience Mondeo customers have come to expect."
Joe Bakaj, vice president, Product Development, Ford of Europe
The updated 508 range features new engines, updated designs and the new technology. Depending on your requirements and budget, Peugeot offer a diesel, diesel-hybrid and diesel micro hybrid with official fuel consumption (combined) as high as 81 MPG and CO2 emissions from 91 g/km. Inside and out the 508 has been modernised, the interior now including a seven-inch touch screen. We think the best value model is the 1.6 e-HDi with official combined fuel economy of 71 MPG with CO2 emissions of 105 g/km. Priced from £22,045 (most efficient hybrid-diesel from £32,600).
