Next Green Car – Family Estate Awards 2014

WINNER: Audi A3 Sportback e-tron – CO2: 37 g/km – NGC: 35 (15)**

WINNER: Audi A3 Sportback e-tron

Not only is the A3 e-tron Audi’s first petrol plug-in hybrid, it’s also the first estate plug-in hybrid available in the UK. A 1.4-litre 148bhp turbocharged engine and 101bhp electric motor together deliver 350 Nm of torque, providing 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds, and a maximum speed of 138 mph. In electric-only mode, driving range is 31 miles with a top EV speed of 80 mph. Official figures are 177 MPG (weighted combined) and CO2 emissions of only 37 g/km. In the real world you’re still likely to achieve a fuel economy of around 65 MPG; which get higher the more you opt to charge and drive in EV mode. While at £29,950 the A3 e-tron is significantly more expensive than its petrol and diesel equivalents, it offers most of the benefits of electric driving without the anxieties of a limited range.

NGC verdict: "As the first plug-in hybrid estate car, the A3 Sportback e-tron perfectly combines conventional fuel practicality for long distance driving with zero-emission motoring for urban trips."

"The five-door A3 Sportback is already widely lauded for its all-round practicality and ample space. Now our groundbreaking new e-tron model - the first ever series production plug-in hybrid from Audi - builds on this winning formula with astounding efficiency, versatility and zero-emissions potential. It is the ideal candidate for family life and we're delighted to receive such high praise from the judges at Next Green Car reflecting this."

COMMENDED: Honda Civic Tourer 1.6 i-DTEC

To illustrate just how good the new 1.6-litre diesel Civic Tourer’s fuel economy can be, this car won the 2014 MPG Marathon with an impressive 97.9 MPG. Even the more realistic official combined figure of 74.3 MPG is still an achievement with CO2 emissions of only 99 g/km. Add to that a class-leading 624 litres of boot space and an excellent reliability score from the latest JD Power survey, and you’ve got a fantastic family estate. Diesels priced from £21,373.
