Not only is the A3 e-tron Audi’s first petrol plug-in hybrid, it’s also the first estate plug-in hybrid available in the UK. A 1.4-litre 148bhp turbocharged engine and 101bhp electric motor together deliver 350 Nm of torque, providing 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds, and a maximum speed of 138 mph. In electric-only mode, driving range is 31 miles with a top EV speed of 80 mph. Official figures are 177 MPG (weighted combined) and CO2 emissions of only 37 g/km. In the real world you’re still likely to achieve a fuel economy of around 65 MPG; which get higher the more you opt to charge and drive in EV mode. While at £29,950 the A3 e-tron is significantly more expensive than its petrol and diesel equivalents, it offers most of the benefits of electric driving without the anxieties of a limited range.
