28.12.2012 Top 10 green cars to watch in 2013
Next Green Car looks ahead to the greenest and most innovative cars due for launch in 2013.
While 2013 will see the continuation of the on-going electric car revolution, expect more ‘slow burn’ than ‘big bang’.
With at least another six high quality EV offering from the major car makers being launched in the New Year, the number of electric cars will certainly rise well beyond the 3,000 or so to make it so far on to UK roads. However, high upfront costs will continue to limit sales until production costs fall another notch.
The real electric news is that, if you are already determined to buy an EV, haggle hard and you should be able to a surprisingly big discount on an existing electric model while stocks last. Don’t settle for anything less than 30% off the OTR price, or if leasing, you should be able to find yourself a new EV for under £150 per month.
However, not all the focus will be on electric cars and plug-in hybrids, as new low emission petrol and diesel models will also make their way to the showrooms. Dozens of diesels are already under the 100 gCO2/km barrier meaning excellent fuel economy, low emissions and zero car tax. Two- and three-cylinder petrol engines are also on offer, with Ford changing the game with its new EcoBoost 1.0 litre engine.
As noted by Dr Ben Lane, Managing Editor of Next Green Car: "Not only are more high quality fully electric models about to be launched in the UK, new plug-in hybrid models will also start to challenge the petrol and diesel regime, offering as they do the ultimate combination of conventional and electric drive-trains.
"However, manufacturers are continuing to bring down the emissions of conventional cars, meaning improved fuel economy and lower cost driving. If you can live with a city car, supermini, or small family car, there’s plenty of choice in the sub-100 gCO2/km range meaning zero car tax as well as high MPG."
To mark a year which will bring many technologically ground breaking models to the showrooms, the following 'Top 10' list highlights some of the most important models across all vehicle classes due for launch in 2013.
1: Volkswagen e-Up! – battery electric – CO2 0 g/km
An electric version of the already successful Up! city car arrives in 2013. With an 80 bhp electric motor, the e-Up! develops excellent torque from standstill. Power is provided by an 18.7 kWh lithium ion battery providing around 90 miles range. Top speed is electronically limited to 80 mph, and a full recharge takes around 6-8 hours using a domestic 13A supply or less using a fast-charger.
2: Ford Fiesta – petrol – CO2 under 100 g/km (est)
Featuring a new frugal three-cylinder 1.0-litre Ecoboost petrol engine, which delivers performance to rival a traditional 1.6-litre engine with significantly improved fuel efficiency and class-leading ultra-low CO2 emissions. Also features improved security functions geared towards young drivers, allowing parents to set a maximum speed and audio volume.
