12.5.2011 Next Green Car launches Zap-Map
Next Green Car has launched Zap-Map, a new map showing electric car charging points across the UK.
With 752 points already mapped, Next Green Car's Zap-Map is the most comprehensive map of electric car charging points in the UK.
As commented by Dr. Ben Lane of Next Green Car, "We were constantly researching on-street charge points for our visitors and trying to find an up-to-date list but we found that the data was fragmented or out of date, so we decided to build one ourselves."
In addition to pinpointing the charge point location, the map shows the street view, type of charger (slow, fast, rapid), pricing, parking and access details. Of the 752 mapped charging points, most are 'slow' or 'standard' with 27 rapid chargers – 26 of which are in Nissan dealerships. These rapid chargers allow 80% charge in 30 minutes – this number is expected to increase substantially over the next year.
Forecasts for the total number of charging points in the UK vary, but the consensus is there will be around 3-5000 points across the UK by the end of the year – Next Green Car will be updating the Zap-Map database on a weekly basis adding new charging points as they come on stream and ensuring that the map stays up-to-date.
As noted by Melanie Shufflebotham of Next Green Car, "There is a good deal of talk about the lack of on-street charging points being a key constraint to the take-up of electric cars. Clearly more points need to be installed, but at least now, with Next Green Car's Zap-Map, consumers and businesses can come to a single source to find a charging point on their route."
Electric car charging points are no longer just confined to London and the Plugged-In places scheme. The most southerly point identified by Next Green Car is at the Nissan dealership in Exeter, the western frontier is also held by a Nissan dealership in Belfast. In the east, a Norwich shopping centre takes the prize whilst the Galson Trust Arras Office on the Isle of Lewis is the most northerly point.
The Next Green Car's Zap-Map can be found within a new electric cars micro site, which provides an electric car buying guide, details available models, prices costs and more.
