13.5.2011 Renault launch new 78mpg Clio
Already hard at work on the imminent arrival of its Z.E. (Zero Emission) range, Renault is accelerating its plans to reduce the environmental impact of its vehicles.
In particular, an improved low-emission Clio, emitting just 94 gCO2/km and offering great fuel economy can now be ordered, and pricing for the first of the Z.E. range, the Twizy, has been announced.
Building on the success of the former 98 g/km Clio, the latest Expression Eco version of the 1.5-litre diesel-engined supermini now offers even better figures. Renault have shaved off an extra 4 g/km whilst improving fuel economy by 2.1 mpg to an impressive 78.4 mpg (combined cycle). This has been achieved with several engineering tweaks under the bonnet and the choice of an 'Eco Pack', offering 15" Aero wheel trims, rear spoiler and ultra-low resistance tyres.
The Eco Pack comes as an optional extra for £250, on top of the standard on-the-road starting price of £12,200. With the Eco Pack, £12,450 will buy you the cheapest sub-100g/km supermini currently available in the UK; £1,445 less than an equivalent low-emission Ford Fiesta Econetic at £13,895 and considerably less than Volkswagens Polo Bluemotion at £14,860.
With diesel now costing over £1.40 per litre, owners of its latest fuel-sipping Renault eco2 model won't have to visit the pumps very often, with 949 miles on offer between fill-ups. The new Clio will also permit other benefits, including exemption from Vehicle Excise Duty and the London Congestion Charge. For business customers, 100% Capital Write Down Allowance and low benefit-in-kind rating of only 13% will also be available.
Alongside continuing improvements to conventionally fuelled models, Renault has made a huge commitment to electric vehicle development with the imminent launch of their Z.E. range. Two versions of the Twizy, Urban and Technic, will be on display at this year's Barcelona Motor Show, both powered by a 17hp electric motor.
UK pricing has been confirmed, starting at just £6,690 on-the-road for the Urban trim; the higher spec Technic trim will cost £7,400. Monthly battery leasing on top of this will be £40 including VAT for a 36 month/4,500 mile agreement.
Twizy's batteries fully charge in just three and a half hours using a domestic electrical supply via a spiral cable stowed behind a flap at the front. Twizy's low weight directly helps its operational range of 62 miles.
The first Twizys will be delivered at the beginning of 2012, and will be manufactured at Valladolid in Spain. Reservations can now be made online at www.renault-ze.com.
