Peugeot to launch super-efficient 208

Peugeot to launch super-efficient 208

Peugeot will launch an all-new model into the supermini segment in the UK next spring – a super efficient model that will be available in both 3 and 5-door options.

The Peugeot 208 is expected to follow on from successful predecessors, namely the iconic 205, 206 and 207 models. With an ambitious specification overhaul, the 208 will represent a true generation leap.

By achieving average CO2 emissions of 34 g/km lower than the 207, the 208 takes the lead in its segment. Its latest generation engine technology and the use of the e-HDi micro-hybrid system on virtually all versions add to the vehicle's improvements in terms of weight reduction and aerodynamics.

With five models, four of which are equipped with the new generation start-stop system (e-HDi), the diesel range's emissions start at 87 g/km of CO2 whilst delivering fuel economy of 83.1 mpg – the diesel versions never exceed 99g!

The 208 introduces a new range of 3-cylinder petrol engines, 1.0- and 1.2-litre VTi, which are particularly efficient, with a range starting at 99 g/km of CO2 and delivering 65.7 mpg.

The 208's polymer mass is made up from 25% of 'green materials', either having been recycled or from natural origins. As a world first, the rear bumper and the fan assembly are made entirely using these materials – this type of bumper alone will permit a saving in manufacturing of 1600 tonnes of fuel a year.

Efficiency has been central to the design of the new 208, it is particularly light (110kg lighter on average than the 207, starting from just 975kg), aerodynamic and compact. These improvements have been made alongside optimising the vehicles dimensions – the 208 has more interior passenger and driver space, and a larger boot.

Aesthetics have also been modernised, with a 'floating grille', impressive light signature and 'boomerang' rear lights all adding to the car's stylish appearance. On the inside, the instruments and controls have been re-thought to become more intuitive and clear – positioned around a small steering wheel. There is also an informative instrument panel providing a wealth of information and a large touch screen.

The new Peugeot 208 will be launched in mainland Europe in the spring and for the UK in the summer of 2012.
