Best MPG Cars

One of the key factors when buying a new car in 2014 is to find a model with high mpg to reduce ongoing running costs. The list below shows the best mpg cars in each vehicle category available to buy new in 2014.

In addition to saving direct fuel costs, the cars with high MPG will have lower tail-pipe CO2 emissions and hence lower Car Tax.

Electric cars have been excluded from this list as they do not use petrol or diesel fuel. See electric cars for listings of electric cars with figures for MPG Equivalent.

If you wish to refine your search by more criteria, go the main green car search page.

Having a high MPG does not directly correlate with being the greenest or most efficient cars in terms of emissions. Next Green Car has developed the Green Car Rating, a unique lifecycle rating which takes into account not just the CO2 tail-pipe emissions but also lifecycle CO2 emissions and air pollutants to provide a single rating.

See Green Car Rating for more.

What is the source of these MPG figures?

MPG figures on this list above are official figures and come from the 'New European Driving Cycle' (NEDC). Performed on a rolling road, these official tests are used for emissions certification of light duty vehicles in Europe, and from which fuel economy figures are calculated (rather than measured). The official tests generate the familiar 'urban', 'extra-urban' and 'combined' official figures.

In reality, drivers find it very hard, if not impossible to reach these MPG figures as the NEDC test is conducted in very specific conditions and do not reflect the real-world. It should be seen as a comparative figure, rather than an absolute figure. To provide a more realistic number, Next Green Car has added a 'Real World MPG' figure to the model pages for the cars in the best MPG list above, and all 50,000 models in the database. This figure is on average 20% below the 'Official MPG' data - click on one of the models on the list above to see these two MPG figures.
