Next Green Car – Citycar Awards 2017

Citycar WINNER
Smart ed range – CO2 0 g/km – NGC Rating 19

WINNER: Smart ed

With Smart electrifying it's entire line-up, it seemed churlish to pick just one of the brand's three citycars as the winner of this year's NGC Award - so we picked all three. Using the same electric powertrain in each of the compact cars, Smart offers an ideal urban runabout. The relatively modest electric driving range of up to 99 miles is of little issue when the car is used for the sort of short trips each model was designed for. The addition of an electric powertrain only improves the car's suitability for purpose, with zero-tailpipe emission travel combining with a fun-to-drive and agile nature that works well in the urban environment.Priced from £16,420 (inc Category 1 OLEV grant).

NGC verdict: "Already considered very capable citycars, the smart line-up is made better still with the addition of an electric powertrain. Perfect to nip and out of traffic in, the electric Smart line-up – comprising of fortwo ed, fortwo cabrio ed, and forfour ed – make a great choice for local trips."

Citycar COMMENDED
Suzuki Ignis – CO2 97 g/km – NGC Rating 34

COMMENDED: Suzuki Ignis

It might look like an SUV, but the Suzuki Ignis has pint-sized proportions and the spirit of a citycar running through its DNA. The practical Ignis makes good use of its SHVS mild hybrid powertrain, using the integrated starter generator to improve efficiency. Great fun to drive, the Ignis is well suited to town driving, and maximises efficiency with a quoted fuel economy figure of 70 MPG and CO2 emissions at 97 g/km. Stylish and sensible, the Ignis is an excellent little runabout. Priced from £13,999.

Suzuki commented: "As the 'Small Car Experts' Suzuki is very pleased to be commended in the Next Green Car Awards 2017, this accolade for Ignis demonstrates once again the success of the high efficiency Dual Jet Petrol engine which offers low emissions and realistic real world fuel economy from its very lightweight platform design. The Ignis is proving very popular in its first year in the UK and has already passed its annual sales target of 6,000 units"
