Next Green Car – Citycar Awards 2016
VW e-up! – CO2 0 g/km – NGC Rating 22
The new e-up! might look very similar to the previous version, but there have been a number of updates made to the little Volkswagen to maintain its status as one of the best city cars on the market. Sharper styling outside is complemented by improved equipment levels in the cabin, making the up! range feel a more grown up car. The e-up! works perfectly in town, using the nippy nature of the electric motor and combining it with the car's compact footprint and foursquare stance to let drivers dart in and out of traffic easily. With zero-tailpipe emissions and an official range of 93 miles (74 miles real-world) proving more than enough for urban driving, the e-up! should be a consideration for anyone who spends the majority of their time driving around town. Priced from £20,780 (inc Category 1 OLEV grant).
NGC verdict: "Already one of the best city cars around, VW has made its e-up! even better with sharper looks and improved equipment. Fun to drive, cheap to run, and with zero tailpipe emissions, the little electric Volkswagen is an ideal urban runabout."
Mahindra e2o – CO2 0 g/km – NGC Rating 22
Mahindra is a new entrant to the UK car market, and to do so with an all-electric city car is both a brave and commendable move. The value e2o has been designed with cities in mind boasting tiny dimensions and a turning circle that almost matches that of the famous London Black Cab. Positioned in the market between the likes of Renault's Twizy and the VW e-up! the e2o is extremely green thanks to its electric powertrain and low weight. Add to that the low ownership costs, mobile servicing mechanics, and a handy 'Battery Revive' function, the e2o is perfectly suited to inner city driving needs. Priced from £12,995 (inc Category 1 OLEV grant).
