Next Generation Awards 2011
WINNER: Vauxhall Ampera E-REV

The Vauxhall Ampera is the first mass produced Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (E-REV) – essentially an battery electric car with an on-board generator. The Ampera has an electric range of around 50 miles, after which its 1.4 litre petrol engine can extend its range by 310 miles. Combined tailpipe CO2 emissions are around 40 g/km – or zero if used in EV mode. 0-62 mph can be reached in 8.8 seconds and top speed is limited to 100 mph.

NGC verdict: "The range-extended electric Ampera is this year's 'game changer'. An electric car with no range anxiety, ultra-low emissions, state-of-the-art design and it's a joy to drive."
COMMENDED: Renault Fluence Electric

Part of Renault's Z.E. (Zero Emission) range, the five-seat Fluence saloon provides an enjoyable driving experience. With 70 kW (95 bhp) and 226 Nm of instant torque, the EV offers up to 115 miles of zero-emission motoring, and can be charged overnight in 6-8 hours. Renault are making it the most affordable EV on the market by leasing the battery at £75 per month, so reducing owner concerns about future battery performance.

COMMENDED: Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid
– CO2: 59 g/km – GCR: TBC
Much anticipated, the plug-in version of the popular and ground-breaking Prius hybrid will be available in 2012. The 5.2 kWh lithium ion battery pack, which can be fully charged in 1.5 hours, can provide up to 12.5 miles of zero-emission motoring. As with the Prius, the new Plug-in allows the driver to select electric EV mode, ECO mode and POWER mode. With its fuel flexibility and top speed of 112 mph, the Plug-in Prius could be as popular as its hybrid sibling.
